Scenario

Max was on a hunting trip with his father, Marcus. They spotted a pangolin curled up into a ball sleeping in a tree hollow. Marcus encouraged his son to capture the pangolin for a fortune as the price for pangolin is high and license is not required for such sale. Is that true?

Mythbusted.

It is compulsory for Marcus to obtain a hunting license and/or trading permit with Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) pursuant to the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010. Pursuant to Section 63 of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010, upon conviction Marcus can be fined up to RM50,000.00 or 2 years jail or to both for carrying out business of dealing without license.

Do note that Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 is only applicable to Peninsular Malaysia.

  • Wild Life Protection Ordinance 1998 (Applies to Sarawak only)
  • Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 (Applies to Sabah only)
